What is Stellar (XLM)?
Stellar (XLM) is an open-source blockchain network designed for fast, low-cost cross-border payments and digital asset issuance. It was co-founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, who had previously co-founded Ripple before departing, and Joyce Kim. The project operates through the Stellar Development Foundation, a non-profit organisation that maintains the network's open-source code and promotes its adoption. McCaleb left active leadership of Stellar in later years but the Foundation continues to develop the protocol.
Stellar's consensus mechanism, the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), uses federated Byzantine Agreement: each validator node defines a set of other nodes it trusts, and the network reaches agreement when overlapping trust groups converge. This allows fast finality (transactions settle in seconds) without energy-intensive proof of work or a staking-based validator set. XLM is the native asset used to pay transaction fees and to maintain minimum account balances; accounts must hold a small XLM reserve to remain active on the network.
Stellar's practical focus is on asset tokenisation and cross-border payments. Circle issued USDC on Stellar as an early deployment. MoneyGram has integrated with Stellar to allow cash on-ramps and off-ramps for digital transfers. The Stellar Development Foundation has specifically targeted financial inclusion use cases in markets with limited banking infrastructure, where low-cost remittances and digital dollar access can have practical impact. XLM is volatile. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.
