What is BNB (BNB)?
BNB is the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, originally launched in 2017 by the cryptocurrency exchange Binance as a utility token for the trading platform. Initially sold through an initial coin offering, it gave holders discounts on trading fees and access to token sales on Binance Launchpad. Over time its role expanded substantially: BNB is now the primary gas token for BNB Smart Chain, a layer-1 network that runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and hosts a large ecosystem of decentralised applications, lending protocols, NFT marketplaces and yield platforms.
BNB Smart Chain was built for speed and low cost, typically settling transactions in seconds at a fraction of a cent, which helped it attract significant on-chain activity particularly during periods when Ethereum fees were high. The trade-off is a more centralised validator set compared with Ethereum or Bitcoin, with a smaller number of approved validators securing the network. The BNB project also runs a periodic burn mechanism that permanently removes BNB from circulation by using a portion of exchange profits and gas fees to buy back and destroy tokens, with a long-run target of halving the supply from its original one hundred million to fifty million.
BNB is one of the most closely watched exchange tokens because Binance is one of the world's largest crypto platforms by trading volume. Events that affect Binance's regulatory standing, operational health or market position tend to affect BNB's price directly. In late 2023, Binance's founder pleaded guilty to US criminal charges and the exchange paid a substantial settlement, which caused significant price volatility. Binance continued operating under new management. BNB is also the gas token for opBNB, a layer-2 chain built on Optimism technology that settles to BNB Smart Chain.
