What is XRP (XRP)?
XRP is the native asset of the XRP Ledger, a public blockchain first released in 2012 and closely associated with Ripple, the company that builds payment software products using the network. The ledger was created by Jed McCaleb, Arthur Britto and David Schwartz and was initially controlled by Ripple before the company distributed most of the XRP supply it held into escrow, releasing a portion each month. The consensus mechanism relies on a network of independent validators rather than energy-intensive proof-of-work mining, which lets the ledger settle transactions in roughly three to five seconds at a very low cost.
XRP is designed primarily as a bridge currency: it can be exchanged for almost any other currency or asset on the ledger in a single hop, which Ripple argues makes it useful for lowering the cost and speed of cross-border payments compared with correspondent banking networks. Ripple's enterprise product, RippleNet, connects financial institutions, and some of those institutions use XRP as a liquidity bridge, though many use other parts of Ripple's technology without holding XRP directly.
The asset is best known in recent history for a years-long legal case between Ripple Labs and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, which the SEC filed in December 2020, alleging that XRP was sold as an unregistered security. A 2023 court ruling found that institutional sales of XRP violated securities law but that programmatic sales on exchanges did not, a split decision that affected where XRP is listed and how it trades. Regulatory outcomes continue to matter for the token's price and availability. The total supply of XRP was pre-mined at inception: 100 billion tokens were created, with a large portion held in escrow by Ripple and released on a defined monthly schedule.
