What is Solana (SOL)?
Solana (SOL) is a high-throughput layer-1 blockchain built for speed and very low transaction costs. Launched in 2020 by a team led by Anatoly Yakovenko, it uses a proof-of-stake consensus combined with a timekeeping mechanism called Proof of History, which lets the network order transactions efficiently and target tens of thousands of transactions per second. SOL is the native token used to pay fees and to stake with validators that secure the chain, and holders can delegate their tokens to a validator to earn staking rewards without running their own node.
Solana has become a hub for consumer crypto applications, including decentralised exchanges, NFT marketplaces, payments apps and, more recently, a large wave of memecoin activity. Its low fees, often a fraction of a cent, make small and frequent transactions practical in a way that is harder on more expensive networks, which has helped it attract both developers and everyday users. The trade-off historically has been periods of network congestion and several outages, which the development community has worked to address through ongoing upgrades to the validator software.
SOL's price reflects demand for its blockspace and the overall health and growth of its ecosystem, the number of active users and applications, and broader crypto-market sentiment, and it is among the more volatile large-cap crypto assets, capable of sharp moves in both directions. Like every cryptocurrency it has experienced deep drawdowns of more than half its value as well as strong multi-month rallies, and the token fell heavily during past market downturns before recovering. Past performance is not a reliable guide to the future, and none of the figures here are a recommendation to act. Always confirm an exchange operates legally in your country and supports SOL before signing up. Crypto is volatile and largely unregulated; never invest more than you can afford to lose.
How to store Solana
SOL can be held on a regulated exchange or in a Solana-native self-custody wallet such as Phantom or Solflare. For larger balances, a hardware wallet that supports Solana keeps your keys offline. As on every network, only connect your wallet to applications you trust and review each transaction before approving it.
Back up your recovery phrase offline, store it securely, and never share it or type it into a website. This is general information, not security or financial advice.
