What is the Bitcoin halving?

Roughly every four years -- precisely every 210,000 blocks -- the reward paid to Bitcoin miners for each new block is cut in half. This steadily slows the rate at which new bitcoin is created, enforcing the protocol's fixed supply schedule. Past halvings have been closely watched because they reduce new supply, though price outcomes are never guaranteed.
