What is LEO Token (LEO)?
UNUS SED LEO (LEO) is the native utility token of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange and the iFinex group, issued in May 2019. It was created following a well-publicised incident in which Crypto Capital, Bitfinex's payment processor, had approximately $850 million in customer and corporate funds seized or frozen by law enforcement in several countries. Bitfinex issued LEO in a private token offering to raise capital to cover the shortfall while the funds remained inaccessible, ultimately recovering a substantial portion of the missing amount over subsequent years following US law enforcement actions.
LEO provides trading fee discounts on Bitfinex, with the discount tier depending on how much LEO a user holds. Bitfinex has committed to using at least 27% of its monthly revenue to buy back and burn LEO tokens until they are all removed from circulation, with additional burn commitments tied to the recovery of the seized Crypto Capital funds. This burn model links the token's supply directly to exchange revenue and recovered funds over time. LEO exists on both the Ethereum blockchain and the EOS blockchain in parallel.
LEO's value is concentrated within the iFinex ecosystem and does not reflect a broad application network. Its price is sensitive to Bitfinex's regulatory standing, the pace of buybacks, and broader exchange-sector sentiment. As with all crypto, LEO is volatile.
