What is Ethereum (ETH)?

Ethereum (ETH) is the largest smart-contract platform and the second-biggest cryptocurrency by market value. Launched in 2015 by a team including Vitalik Buterin, it extended the blockchain idea beyond simple payments: developers can deploy self-executing programs called smart contracts, which power decentralised finance (DeFi), stablecoins, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and thousands of other applications. ETH is the native asset used to pay transaction fees, known as "gas", and to secure the network through staking. Because so much of the wider crypto economy is built on top of it, Ethereum is often described as the settlement layer for on-chain finance.

In 2022 Ethereum completed "The Merge", switching from energy-intensive proof-of-work mining to proof-of-stake, which cut its energy use dramatically. Validators now lock up ETH to propose and attest to blocks, earning rewards and risking penalties, known as slashing, for misbehaviour. A fee-burning mechanism introduced in 2021 (EIP-1559) removes a portion of ETH from circulation with each transaction, which can make net issuance negative during busy periods and is sometimes called "ultrasound money" by supporters.

Ethereum's value is closely tied to demand for blockspace and for the applications built on it. Layer-2 networks such as rollups now handle much of the day-to-day activity at lower cost, settling back to Ethereum for security, and a multi-year roadmap continues to focus on scaling, lowering fees and improving the experience for ordinary users. The ecosystem also includes a large share of the stablecoins, lending markets and tokenised assets in crypto, which deepens demand for ETH as the asset used to pay for that activity. As with all crypto, ETH is volatile and has seen large drawdowns of well over half its value at times, alongside long stretches of growth, and any given year can look very different from the last. Past performance does not predict future results, and nothing on this page is a recommendation. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research and consider your own circumstances before making any decision.

Where to buy Ethereum (ETH)

Affiliate disclosure: some links below may be partner links. If you open an account through them, TheWeal may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects which exchanges we list or what we write. See our affiliate disclosure. Nothing here is financial advice – do your own research.

Always confirm an exchange operates legally in your country and supports ETH before signing up. Crypto is volatile and largely unregulated; never invest more than you can afford to lose.

How to store Ethereum

Ether can be kept on a regulated exchange for ease of buying and selling, where the platform custodies your keys. Holders who want full control move ETH to a self-custody wallet such as MetaMask, or a hardware wallet for larger balances. Because Ethereum wallets also interact with DeFi apps and NFTs, take extra care: only connect to sites you trust, and review every transaction you sign.

Your recovery phrase is the single backup for a self-custody wallet — store it offline, never enter it on a website, and never share it. Be alert to "drainer" scams that ask you to approve token spending. This is general information, not security or financial advice.

Ethereum (ETH) FAQ

Is Ethereum a good investment?

We don't make buy or sell recommendations. Suitability depends on your goals, horizon and risk tolerance, and ETH is highly volatile. See our learn hub and methodology, then do your own research.

What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Bitcoin is designed primarily as a scarce store of value and settlement network. Ethereum is a programmable platform for smart contracts and applications, with ETH used to pay network fees and secure proof-of-stake.

What is staking ETH?

Staking locks up ETH to help validate the network in exchange for rewards. It carries risks including price volatility, slashing penalties and lock-up periods. Learn more in our glossary.

How are TheWeal's Ethereum predictions generated?

They are model-based scenarios built from price history, volatility, liquidity and market regime — not hand-tuned and not a forecast. See methodology.

How do I store Ethereum?

Either on a regulated exchange (custodial) or in a self-custody wallet where you control the keys. For larger holdings a hardware wallet is widely recommended.

Can the Ethereum price go to zero?

Any crypto asset can lose most or all of its value. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
