What is Chainlink (LINK)?
Chainlink (LINK) is a decentralised oracle network that solves a fundamental problem in blockchain design: smart contracts are deterministic programs that run on-chain, but they cannot natively read data from the outside world. Any contract that needs the current price of an asset, an interest rate, sports results, weather conditions or the outcome of an election must rely on an external data feed called an oracle. Chainlink was designed to make that process trustworthy and decentralised.
The project was founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis and launched its mainnet in 2019 following an initial coin offering in 2017. The core mechanism uses a network of independent node operators, each of whom retrieves the same data point from multiple sources, aggregates their answers, and submits a consensus value to the smart contract. Node operators are paid in LINK for accurate responses and can have LINK slashed if they behave dishonestly, creating a financial incentive for correct data delivery. For high-value price feeds used in DeFi lending protocols, many tens of nodes participate, making manipulation expensive.
Over time, Chainlink has expanded well beyond simple price oracles. Its product suite now includes Verifiable Random Function (VRF) for provably fair on-chain randomness (used in NFT drops and gaming), Automation (formerly Keepers) for triggering smart contracts based on conditions, Proof of Reserve for auditing custodians holding tokenised assets, and the Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) for passing messages and tokens between blockchains. These services have given LINK a broader utility narrative and made Chainlink infrastructure for both DeFi and traditional-finance blockchain pilots.
LINK has a fixed total supply of one billion tokens, with approximately 35% initially allocated to Chainlink Labs for development and partnerships and another 35% reserved for node operator incentives. The token accrues value to the extent that node operators and stakers must hold LINK to participate in the network and earn fees. As with all crypto, LINK is volatile and has experienced deep drawdowns from its highs. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.

Supply figures are live from CoinGecko. A capped max supply means new LINK issuance is finite; an uncapped or inflationary supply behaves differently. This is information only, not investment advice.

Always confirm an exchange operates legally in your country and supports LINK before signing up. Crypto is volatile and largely unregulated; never invest more than you can afford to lose.
How to store Chainlink
LINK is an ERC-20 token stored in any Ethereum-compatible self-custody wallet. A hardware wallet is recommended for larger balances.
Your recovery phrase is the master backup — store it offline and never share it. This is general information, not financial advice.
Chainlink (LINK) FAQ
Is LINK a good investment?
We don't give recommendations. LINK is volatile and its value is tied to demand for oracle services across DeFi. Do your own research.
What does Chainlink actually do?
Chainlink node operators fetch data from external sources (like asset prices from exchanges), deliver it to smart contracts on-chain, and are paid in LINK for doing so accurately.
How are TheWeal's LINK predictions made?
Model-based scenarios from price history, volatility and regime — not a forecast and not advice. See methodology.
How do I store LINK?
LINK is an ERC-20 token held in any Ethereum-compatible wallet; a hardware wallet is recommended for larger amounts.
Can I lose money holding LINK?
Yes. Crypto prices can fall sharply. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is CCIP and why does it matter for Chainlink?
CCIP (Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol) is a Chainlink product that allows smart contracts on one blockchain to send messages and tokens to another, using Chainlink's node network for security. It extends Chainlink's utility beyond data feeds into cross-chain infrastructure.
