What is Cardano (ADA)?
Cardano (ADA) is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain launched in September 2017 by IOHK (Input Output Hong Kong), a research and development company co-founded by Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson. It stands apart from most blockchain projects by its deliberate, academically rigorous approach: each major protocol component is developed with peer-reviewed research, published in academic papers and formal specifications before being implemented. The project rolls out capability in distinct named phases rather than shipping features as they become ready, which has meant a slower pace of development than some competitors but also a stated commitment to correctness over speed.
ADA is Cardano's native asset, used to pay for transactions and smart-contract execution on the network. Cardano's consensus protocol, Ouroboros, is the first peer-reviewed proof-of-stake protocol to be proven secure in academic literature. It allows any ADA holder to delegate their stake to a staking pool of their choice, earning a portion of block rewards without locking their coins or requiring technical knowledge to run a node. The delegation model is liquid, meaning delegated ADA can be moved or spent at any time, which distinguishes it from networks that require lock-up periods.
Smart-contract capability was added to Cardano in September 2021 through a hard fork called the Alonzo upgrade, using a scripting language called Plutus based on Haskell. The decentralised application ecosystem is younger than Ethereum's and smaller in total value locked, but has grown steadily. Cardano has a fixed maximum supply of 45 billion ADA, with a significant portion already distributed to stakers and the rest to be issued gradually through staking rewards. ADA has seen large drawdowns of more than 90% from prior peaks in past market cycles, alongside periods of significant appreciation. As with all crypto, it is volatile, and past performance is not a guide to future results. We don't give recommendations. ADA is volatile and suitability depends on your own circumstances. Read our methodology and do your own research.
What is staking ADA?
You can delegate ADA to a staking pool to help secure the network and earn rewards. Your coins are not locked and remain in your wallet, though rewards and risks vary.
How are TheWeal's Cardano predictions made?
Model-based scenarios from price history, volatility, liquidity and regime — not a forecast and not advice. See methodology.
How do I store ADA?
On an exchange (custodial) or a Cardano-compatible self-custody wallet such as Daedalus or Yoroi; a hardware wallet is recommended for larger amounts.
Can I lose money holding Cardano?
Yes. Crypto prices can fall sharply. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is the Ouroboros consensus?
Ouroboros is Cardano's proof-of-stake consensus protocol, designed by IOHK using peer-reviewed cryptographic research. Stake pool operators are elected to produce blocks proportionally to the ADA delegated to them.
