What is Sui (SUI)?
Sui (SUI) is a layer-1 blockchain launched in May 2023 by Mysten Labs, a company co-founded by Evan Cheng, Adeniyi Abiodun, Sam Blackshear, George Danezis and Kostas Chalkias — all former engineers from Meta's Diem project who worked on the Move language and Diem's consensus protocols before Meta cancelled the project. Mysten Labs raised approximately $300 million in a Series B before Sui's mainnet launch.
Like Aptos, Sui uses the Move programming language but implements it with a distinct object-centric data model. In Sui, everything is represented as objects with explicit owners. Simple transactions that involve only a single owner — like transferring a token or minting an NFT — can be processed in parallel without going through consensus at all, using a faster finality mechanism called Sui Finality. More complex multi-party transactions that require global state go through the full Byzantine Fault Tolerant consensus. This combination allows Sui to achieve very high throughput for the workloads most common in gaming and consumer applications.
Sui's on-chain gaming and NFT ecosystem grew rapidly after launch, with games, NFT collections and DeFi protocols deploying on the chain. Like Aptos, its token distribution was controversial at launch, with a large portion allocated to Mysten Labs, investors and the Sui Foundation relative to the community.
