What is Avalanche (AVAX)?
Avalanche (AVAX) is a layer-1 blockchain platform launched in September 2020 by Ava Labs, a company co-founded by Emin Gun Sirer, a Cornell University computer science professor with a long background in distributed systems research, along with Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan Ted Yin. Its design departs from most blockchains by separating the network into three distinct chains, each optimised for a specific purpose. The X-Chain handles the creation and transfer of assets; the C-Chain runs Ethereum-compatible smart contracts and is where most decentralised applications on Avalanche are deployed; and the P-Chain coordinates validators and manages the creation of custom blockchains called subnets.
One of Avalanche's most technically distinctive features is its consensus protocol, which uses repeated random sub-sampling among validators to reach agreement. Rather than waiting for a large majority of all validators to confirm a block (as in many Byzantine Fault Tolerant protocols), each validator samples a small random group repeatedly, and the network converges very quickly. The result is that transactions on the C-Chain can achieve near-instant finality — often under two seconds — which is much faster than Ethereum mainnet.
The subnet model is Avalanche's other major architectural feature. Any organisation can deploy a custom blockchain with its own rules, virtual machine, tokenomics and validator requirements as a subnet, while relying on AVAX staking for security at the base layer. This has attracted financial institutions, gaming studios and government pilots that need a compliant or customised execution environment without building an entirely independent network.
AVAX competes in a crowded field of smart-contract layer-1 platforms, and its ecosystem has seen cycles of rapid growth during bull markets and sharp contraction in downturns. The price is volatile, with large drawdowns in past market cycles alongside periods of strong appreciation. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.

Always confirm an exchange operates legally in your country and supports AVAX before signing up. Crypto is volatile and largely unregulated; never invest more than you can afford to lose.
How to store Avalanche
AVAX can be held on a regulated exchange or in a self-custody wallet such as Core (Avalanche's native wallet) or MetaMask connected to the Avalanche C-Chain. Hardware wallets are recommended for larger balances.

Avalanche (AVAX) FAQ
Is AVAX a good investment?
We don't give recommendations. AVAX is volatile and suitability depends on your circumstances. Do your own research and see our methodology.
What makes Avalanche different from Ethereum?
Avalanche uses a different consensus mechanism that achieves faster finality, and its subnet architecture allows custom blockchains. Its C-Chain is Ethereum-compatible, so Ethereum tools and wallets work on it.
How are TheWeal's Avalanche predictions made?
Model-based scenarios from price history, volatility, liquidity and regime — not a forecast and not advice. See methodology.
How do I store AVAX?
On an exchange (custodial) or the Core wallet (Avalanche's native wallet), or MetaMask configured for the Avalanche C-Chain. Hardware wallets are recommended for larger amounts.
Can I lose money holding AVAX?
Yes. Crypto prices can fall sharply. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is a subnet on Avalanche?
A subnet is a custom blockchain on Avalanche with its own rules, virtual machine and validator requirements. Subnets allow organisations to deploy purpose-built chains while optionally using AVAX staking for security.
