What is Hedera (HBAR)?
Hedera (HBAR) is the native token of the Hedera network, a public distributed ledger with an unusual governance structure. Instead of being controlled by an open developer community or foundation, Hedera is governed by the Hedera Governing Council, a body of up to 39 large organisations from technology, finance, healthcare, media and other sectors, including companies such as Google, IBM, Boeing, LG, Nomura and Standard Bank. Council members serve rotating terms and collectively manage the network's rules, roadmap and treasury. This design gives enterprises a known set of counterparties rather than a pseudonymous community, which is Hedera's explicit pitch to institutional adopters.
Technically, Hedera uses a Directed Acyclic Graph data structure rather than a chain of blocks. Its consensus algorithm, Hashgraph, was developed by founder Leemon Baird and works by gossiping events across nodes and then running a virtual voting mechanism on the gossip history. The developers claim this achieves high throughput, very low fees, and deterministic finality in seconds without the energy cost of proof-of-work. HBAR is used to pay transaction fees, to stake and to denominate the network's native micropayment and token services.
Use cases on Hedera include tokenisation of real-world assets, identity verification, supply-chain tracking and central bank digital currency pilots. The council governance is a deliberate design choice but is also a point of critique from those who view decentralisation as essential to blockchain credibility. As with all crypto, HBAR is volatile.
