What is Polkadot (DOT)?
Polkadot (DOT) is a layer-0 blockchain protocol designed to connect multiple specialised blockchains, called parachains, into a single interoperable network. It was conceived by Gavin Wood, one of the original co-founders of Ethereum and the author of the Solidity programming language, who published a whitepaper in 2016 and then founded Web3 Foundation to develop the project. Polkadot launched on mainnet in 2020 after a multi-year development period.
The architecture has two main layers. The relay chain provides shared security and coordinates communication: it validates all parachain blocks and finalises them using a nominated proof-of-stake consensus mechanism called GRANDPA/BABE. Individual parachains are purpose-built blockchains that plug into the relay chain rather than needing to bootstrap their own validator set. Each parachain can have its own token, rules and virtual machine, while inheriting relay-chain security. Projects win parachain slots through a candle-auction mechanism where participants lock DOT for the duration of a lease period, typically 96 weeks; when the lease ends, the locked DOT is returned.
DOT is used for three functions on the network: governance voting, staking (nominating validators), and bonding DOT to secure parachain slots. The total supply is not capped; issuance is set by governance and is partly offset by fees and slashing. Polkadot's on-chain governance system, which has gone through several iterations including the OpenGov upgrade in 2023, is one of the most elaborate in the industry, with multiple voting tracks, delegation and time-locked decisions all managed by DOT holders on-chain.
Polkadot also maintains a sister network called Kusama, which serves as a live canary chain where new features are deployed before they reach Polkadot mainnet. Kusama has the same basic architecture but faster governance timelines and looser guardrails, acting as a proving ground for parachains and protocol upgrades. As with all crypto, DOT is volatile.
