What is Internet Computer (ICP)?
Internet Computer (ICP) is the native token of the Internet Computer Protocol, a blockchain project developed by the DFINITY Foundation. DFINITY was founded in 2016 by Dominic Williams, a British computer scientist, and raised approximately $121 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain Capital before launching on public mainnet in May 2021. The project is one of the most heavily funded in crypto history.
The stated ambition of the Internet Computer is to host software on a decentralised network that runs at web speed, eliminating dependence on centralised cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure. Rather than just recording transactions like most blockchains, the Internet Computer Protocol is designed to execute arbitrary computation and store data directly on-chain. Applications are built as Canisters, which are smart contracts that can host both back-end logic and front-end web assets, enabling fully on-chain decentralised applications including social networks, enterprise tools and messaging services that do not rely on any centralised servers.
The network uses a consensus mechanism called Threshold Relay, combined with a Byzantine Fault Tolerant protocol, and organises its node providers into independent subnets. Each subnet can run many Canisters in parallel, and subnets can be added to scale total network capacity. Governance is conducted through a system called the Network Nervous System (NNS), where ICP holders stake tokens in Neurons and vote on proposals including protocol upgrades, node provider approvals and subnet configurations. ICP is also used to pay for computation, converted internally into "cycles" that are burned as smart contracts execute, creating a consumption-based deflationary mechanism on that portion of the supply.
ICP opened at extremely high prices on launch day in May 2021 and fell by more than 95% within months, making it one of the largest drawdowns from an opening price in crypto history. This history makes its volatility and the gap between stated ambition and market reception an important part of understanding the asset.
