What is The Sandbox (SAND)?
The Sandbox (SAND) is the governance and utility token of The Sandbox, a user-generated-content virtual world and gaming platform on Ethereum. The Sandbox was originally a mobile game company founded by Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget; in 2018, Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong-based games and blockchain investment company, acquired The Sandbox and pivoted it to a blockchain-based model. The platform allows users to buy virtual land NFTs called LAND, create game experiences and assets using a free voxel-based editor called VoxEdit and a no-code game builder called Game Maker, and to sell creations in the platform's marketplace.
SAND is used as the primary currency within The Sandbox ecosystem: players spend SAND to purchase LAND parcels, digital assets and wearables; creators earn SAND when their experiences attract players; and the platform charges fees in SAND. SAND holders can also participate in DAO governance of the platform. Animoca Brands and The Sandbox conducted hundreds of brand and celebrity partnerships during 2021 and 2022, bringing names from fashion, music, sports and entertainment into the platform to attract mainstream attention.
The Sandbox and the broader metaverse gaming sector experienced a severe sentiment collapse after 2022. LAND and SAND prices fell dramatically from their peaks, active user numbers declined, and the narrative around virtual worlds as viable entertainment platforms faced significant scepticism. The Sandbox continues to develop the platform and pursue partnerships, but its value depends heavily on whether metaverse gaming adoption recovers at meaningful scale.
