What is NEAR Protocol (NEAR)?
NEAR Protocol (NEAR) is a proof-of-stake layer-1 blockchain that prioritises developer experience and mainstream usability. It was founded by Illia Polosukhin (a former Google engineer who co-authored the influential "Attention Is All You Need" paper that introduced the Transformer architecture behind modern AI language models) and Alexander Skidanov. The project raised around $21.6 million in a private funding round before launching its mainnet in October 2020.
NEAR's design choices deliberately target onboarding friction. Accounts have human-readable names rather than hex addresses; for example, a user can be "alice.near" rather than a 40-character string. Smart contracts pay a portion of the gas fees they generate back to the developer who wrote them, creating an economic model where building popular contracts earns income. The NEAR virtual machine runs WebAssembly, allowing developers to write contracts in Rust or JavaScript rather than Solidity.
Scalability is handled through a sharding design called Nightshade. Rather than running as a single chain, the NEAR network is divided into shards, each of which processes a subset of transactions in parallel. Nightshade uses a technique where each shard produces only a "chunk" of a block, and these chunks are combined by block producers into a single block. As demand grows, additional shards can be added. The network also includes Aurora, an Ethereum Virtual Machine deployed as a smart contract on NEAR that allows Ethereum developers to run their existing Solidity code on NEAR with minimal changes, connecting NEAR to the broader Ethereum tooling ecosystem. NEAR is used to pay transaction fees and to stake with validators who secure the network. Sixty percent of each transaction fee is burned, while forty percent is paid to the contract that processed the transaction — a design that creates a revenue model for successful applications. NEAR has positioned itself particularly around AI-adjacent applications and user-owned data as the ecosystem has developed, reflecting the co-founder's background. As with all crypto, NEAR is volatile. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.

NEAR Protocol (NEAR) FAQ
Is NEAR a good investment?
We don't give recommendations. NEAR is volatile and competes in a crowded smart-contract platform market. Do your own research.
What is sharding in NEAR?
Sharding splits the network into parallel sections called shards, each processing a subset of transactions simultaneously, which increases overall throughput compared with a single-chain design.
How are TheWeal's NEAR predictions made?
Model-based scenarios from price history, volatility and regime — not a forecast and not advice. See methodology.
How do I store NEAR?
In a NEAR-compatible wallet such as the official NEAR wallet or MyNearWallet; hardware wallet support is available via Ledger.
Can I lose money holding NEAR?
Yes. Crypto prices can fall sharply. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What are human-readable account names on NEAR?
NEAR accounts use names like alice.near instead of hex addresses, making them easier to share and remember. This design decision was deliberate to reduce user errors and improve the experience for non-technical users.
