What is Immutable (IMX)?
Immutable (IMX) is the native token of the Immutable ecosystem, an Ethereum scaling platform focused exclusively on NFTs and blockchain gaming. The company was founded in 2018 by James Ferguson and Robbie Ferguson and launched Immutable X in 2021 — a StarkWare-powered zero-knowledge rollup that enabled gas-free NFT minting and trading while settling cryptographic proofs of validity to Ethereum. This design made it attractive for trading card games, collectibles and NFT marketplaces that needed the cost economics of Solana but preferred Ethereum security.
The Immutable platform evolved in 2023 to include Immutable zkEVM, a new EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollup that allows game developers to deploy Solidity smart contracts directly, significantly broadening the developer pool beyond those willing to learn StarkWare's proprietary Cairo language. Immutable has signed partnerships with major game publishers and game studios and operates Immutable Passport, an embedded wallet designed to reduce onboarding friction for new players unfamiliar with crypto wallets.
IMX is used to pay protocol fees (20% of all NFT fees on the platform go to IMX stakers), to stake and to participate in governance.
