What is Injective (INJ)?
Injective (INJ) is the native token of the Injective Protocol, a layer-1 blockchain built with the Cosmos SDK and purpose-built for decentralised finance applications, particularly derivatives and order-book trading. Injective was co-founded by Eric Chen and Albert Chon, and the project raised funding from Binance Labs and Pantera Capital before its mainnet launch in 2021.
The key architectural distinction of Injective is that it provides a shared on-chain order book as core infrastructure rather than requiring each decentralised exchange to build and maintain its own matching engine. This allows DEXs built on Injective to share liquidity and means Injective can host perpetual contracts, spot trading, prediction markets and other financial instruments with deeper liquidity than individual isolated protocols. Injective also maintains EVM compatibility, allowing Ethereum-native developers to deploy Solidity smart contracts, and connects to other Cosmos-ecosystem chains via the IBC protocol.
INJ has a deflationary token mechanism: 60% of all trading fees collected on Injective are used in a weekly buy-back-and-burn auction, where the community votes on which assets to use the fees to purchase before burning them, reducing INJ supply over time. INJ is used to pay transaction fees, to stake with validators and to participate in governance. As with all crypto, INJ is volatile.
