What is Aptos (APT)?
Aptos (APT) is a layer-1 blockchain launched in October 2022 by Aptos Labs, a company founded by Mo Shaikh and Avery Ching, two engineers who previously worked on Meta's Diem blockchain project before Meta cancelled it. When Diem was shut down and its assets sold to Silvergate Bank in early 2022, several teams from the project re-formed as independent companies to build new blockchains using the technologies they had developed at Meta, of which Aptos was one.
Aptos is built around the Move programming language, a resource-oriented language designed to model digital assets as resources that can be stored, transferred and consumed but not accidentally duplicated or destroyed, which reduces certain classes of smart-contract bugs. Its consensus algorithm, DiemBFT (adapted for Aptos as AptosBFT), targets sub-second finality. The chain uses parallel transaction execution, meaning transactions that don't touch the same data can be processed simultaneously, improving throughput compared with strictly sequential execution.
Aptos raised around $350 million in venture capital from investors including a16z Crypto and FTX Ventures before and after launch, making it one of the better-funded newer layer-1s. Its token distribution attracted criticism when a substantial share of initial supply was allocated to insiders and investors relative to community allocations. The ecosystem has grown with DeFi, NFT and gaming applications, though it remains smaller than more established platforms. APT is volatile.
