What is Optimism (OP)?
Optimism (OP) is the governance token of the Optimism Collective, the entity overseeing the OP Stack, an open-source framework for building Ethereum layer-2 blockchains using optimistic rollup technology. Optimism was developed by a team that included Karl Floersch and Ben Jones and launched its mainnet in December 2021. The OP Stack has become the foundation not only for Optimism's own network but for Base (Coinbase's layer-2), Mode, Zora, and many other chains in a growing family called the Superchain.
Like Arbitrum, Optimism uses the optimistic rollup design: transactions are executed off Ethereum, compressed and posted on-chain, with a 7-day fraud proof window for challengers to dispute invalid batches. The OP Stack is fully open source, which is why Coinbase was able to build Base on it without licensing fees, creating a pattern of shared infrastructure across multiple networks.
The Optimism Collective uses a bicameral governance model. The Token House consists of OP holders who vote on protocol upgrades and network parameters. The Citizens' House consists of holders of non-transferable badges who vote on Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RetroPGF), a mechanism for rewarding open-source projects that created value for the Ethereum and Optimism ecosystem. This public-goods focus is central to Optimism's stated philosophy. Like ARB, OP does not automatically accrue network fee revenue; whether to implement fee-sharing is a recurring governance question. As with all crypto, OP is volatile.
