What is Kaspa (KAS)?

Kaspa (KAS) is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency built on a novel block-DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) architecture called GHOSTDAG, developed by Yonatan Sompolinsky, whose academic work on DAG-based consensus formed the theoretical basis for the project. The key innovation is that Kaspa does not discard parallel blocks as orphans (as Bitcoin does) but instead incorporates them all into the chain's ordering. This allows Kaspa to sustain very high block rates — one block per second at launch, with the network targeting even higher rates over time — while maintaining proof-of-work security guarantees.

KAS was launched in November 2021 with no pre-mine, no ICO, no venture capital allocation and no developer treasury percentage of the block reward. The coin is mined from genesis by open participation, which its community considers a fair-launch model consistent with Bitcoin's original approach. The emission schedule follows a smooth curve rather than abrupt halvings. Total supply is capped.

Kaspa deliberately does not support general smart contracts on its base layer, which its developers argue keeps the protocol simple and secure. It positions itself as a scalable proof-of-work cryptocurrency for value transfer rather than a programmable application platform. Its community has grown substantially among mining enthusiasts and those interested in alternative proof-of-work approaches to scalability. As with all crypto, KAS is volatile.
