What is Cosmos Hub (ATOM)?
Cosmos (ATOM) is the native token of the Cosmos Hub, the central chain in the Cosmos network — an ecosystem of independent blockchains designed to interoperate through a protocol called the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC). The vision, articulated in a 2016 white paper by Jae Kwon and Ethan Buchman, was an "internet of blockchains" where separate chains with different purposes could exchange value and data without a single hub controlling them.
ATOM is used to stake on the Cosmos Hub, where validators secure the chain and earn rewards in newly issued ATOM and a portion of transaction fees. The governance model is on-chain, with ATOM holders voting on parameter changes and upgrades. The Cosmos SDK is a toolkit for building new chains in the Cosmos ecosystem, and IBC is the standard for connecting them. Many well-known projects including Osmosis, dYdX v4 and Celestia launched as Cosmos chains.
ATOM's value proposition has been debated within the community, as IBC does not strictly require ATOM, and chains can benefit from Cosmos tooling without routing economic value through the Hub.
