What is Algorand (ALGO)?
Algorand (ALGO) is a layer-1 blockchain founded by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor and 2012 Turing Award winner in cryptography (shared with Shafi Goldwasser). Micali was a co-inventor of probabilistic encryption and verifiable random functions, the latter of which forms the cryptographic heart of Algorand's consensus protocol. The blockchain launched its mainnet in June 2019 after raising over $60 million in a Dutch auction token sale.
Algorand's consensus mechanism is called Pure Proof of Stake. Unlike delegated proof-of-stake systems, every ALGO holder can participate in consensus without delegation, and validators are selected randomly in proportion to their stake using a cryptographic verifiable random function that cannot be predicted or manipulated in advance. Once selected, validators communicate using a Byzantine Agreement protocol. The result is claimed fast finality (blocks finalise in seconds) with no forks and without requiring a large amount of staked capital to participate.
Algorand has targeted institutional and government use cases, including stablecoin issuance (Circle's USDC has been issued on Algorand), central bank digital currency pilots in several countries and asset tokenisation projects. The Algorand Foundation funds ecosystem development and research. A recurring criticism has been that early token sales created significant selling pressure on ALGO from early backers, which has weighed on the price. As with all crypto, ALGO is volatile.
