What is Flow (FLOW)?
Flow (FLOW) is the native token of the Flow blockchain, developed by Dapper Labs, the company founded by Roham Gharegozlou that built CryptoKitties on Ethereum in 2017. CryptoKitties was one of the first viral NFT applications and famously congested the Ethereum network at the height of its popularity, which led Dapper Labs to design a purpose-built blockchain for consumer-grade applications. Flow launched its mainnet in 2020.
Flow was built specifically for mainstream consumer NFT and gaming applications, with explicit attention to user experience. Its account model supports human-readable usernames and key recovery mechanisms more familiar to non-crypto users. The Cadence smart-contract language was designed with resource-oriented programming that makes it harder to accidentally duplicate or lose digital assets, reducing smart-contract bugs. The consensus model separates node roles (collection, execution, verification and consensus nodes each handle different tasks), which the team argues allows both high throughput and security.
Dapper Labs attracted major sports league partnerships: NBA Top Shot (NBA highlight NFTs) and NFL All Day launched on Flow and collectively generated hundreds of millions of dollars in NFT trading volume during the 2021-2022 NFT boom. Both platforms's trading volumes have declined substantially from their peaks. FLOW is used to pay transaction fees, to stake with nodes and for governance. As other NFT ecosystems have grown on Solana and Ethereum layer-2 networks, Flow faces ongoing competition for developer and user attention. As with all crypto, FLOW is volatile.
