What is Filecoin (FIL)?
Filecoin (FIL) is the token of a decentralised data storage network launched in October 2020 by Protocol Labs, the research and development company that also created the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). The network's goal is to build an open market for persistent data storage, where providers compete on price and reliability rather than users being locked into centralised cloud operators.
The mechanics work in two layers. IPFS addresses data by its content hash rather than its location, meaning the same file can be retrieved from any node that has it. Filecoin adds a persistent economic layer: storage providers must post FIL as collateral and demonstrate through cryptographic proofs (Proof of Replication and Proof of Spacetime) that they are genuinely holding the data they agreed to store, continuously over time. If they fail, their collateral is slashed. Clients pay for storage deals in FIL, which is held in escrow and released to providers as they prove ongoing storage.
Filecoin has attracted use cases in NFT metadata storage (particularly through the nft.storage service), scientific data archiving and Web3 data infrastructure. A significant challenge has been the gap between total available network capacity and actual paid utilisation: the network hosts far more available storage than paying customers have activated. FIL is volatile and its long-run price depends on whether real demand for decentralised storage develops at meaningful scale.
