What is Arbitrum (ARB)?
Arbitrum (ARB) is the governance token of the Arbitrum ecosystem, developed by Offchain Labs, a company founded by Princeton researchers Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner. Arbitrum is the largest Ethereum layer-2 network by total value locked and has hosted a significant share of DeFi activity including major protocols like GMX, Uniswap v3 on Arbitrum, Aave, and many others that chose it for its combination of low fees, Ethereum security and EVM compatibility.
Arbitrum uses optimistic rollup technology. Transactions are executed by a sequencer on Arbitrum's off-chain network, compressed and posted to Ethereum as calldata. The design assumes transactions are valid by default; there is a 7-day challenge window during which anyone who detects a fraudulent transaction can submit a fraud proof to Ethereum and have the invalid batch reversed. This dispute mechanism means withdrawals from Arbitrum to Ethereum take at least 7 days without using a bridge.
ARB was distributed via airdrop in March 2023, one of the largest by value in crypto history. It functions as a governance token only: ARB holders vote through the Arbitrum DAO on protocol upgrades, security council membership and treasury allocations. The token does not automatically accrue transaction fee revenue; whether to implement a fee-sharing mechanism has been an ongoing governance discussion. As with all crypto, ARB is volatile.
