What is Aave (AAVE)?
Aave (AAVE) is the governance token of the Aave Protocol, one of DeFi's oldest and largest decentralised lending platforms. Aave was originally launched as ETHLend by Stani Kulechov in 2017 before rebranding and rebuilding as Aave in 2020 with a new pooled liquidity model. Rather than matching individual lenders and borrowers, Aave uses shared liquidity pools: depositors contribute assets that are pooled together, earning interest as utilisation grows, while borrowers draw from the pool against collateral. Interest rates adjust algorithmically based on how much of the available pool has been borrowed. Aave has been deployed on Ethereum, Polygon, Avalanche, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and other networks.
AAVE holders govern the protocol through snapshot and on-chain votes, determining collateral risk parameters, interest rate models, which new markets to support and how to deploy the protocol's treasury. AAVE can also be staked in the Safety Module, a contract that serves as a last-resort backstop: if the protocol experiences a shortfall event (losses exceeding what the normal liquidation system can cover), up to 30% of staked AAVE can be slashed and sold to cover the deficit. Stakers receive AAVE rewards for accepting this risk. This mechanism gives AAVE holders a genuine financial stake in the quality of governance decisions.
