What is POL (ex-MATIC) (POL)?
The Polygon Ecosystem Token (POL, formerly MATIC) is the native token of the Polygon network, an Ethereum scaling ecosystem with roots going back to 2017 when Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun founded Matic Network. Matic launched as a plasma-based sidechain intended to offload transaction volume from Ethereum at lower cost. After rebranding to Polygon in 2021 and raising $450 million from Sequoia Capital and SoftBank among others, the project expanded into a much larger ambition: building a suite of Ethereum scaling solutions including Polygon PoS, Polygon zkEVM, and the Polygon CDK toolkit for launching application-specific chains.
Polygon PoS — the main Polygon chain — became one of the most widely used EVM-compatible networks by transaction count through 2021 and 2022, attracting NFT marketplaces (notably OpenSea and Reddit Collectible Avatars), gaming projects, DeFi protocols and large brands experimenting with digital collectibles. Its near-zero fees and Ethereum compatibility made onboarding easy for developers already familiar with Solidity. The chain uses a proof-of-stake validator set and checkpoints block hashes to Ethereum mainnet periodically, offering a middle ground between full Ethereum security and pure speed.
In 2023, Polygon announced a Polygon 2.0 roadmap that would migrate the ecosystem's core token from MATIC to POL, a new token designed to serve as the staking currency across multiple Polygon chains simultaneously. The migration began in late 2023 at a 1:1 ratio. Polygon zkEVM, launched on mainnet in March 2023, settles transaction proofs directly on Ethereum using zero-knowledge cryptography, providing stronger security guarantees than the PoS sidechain.
The Polygon CDK (Chain Development Kit) also allows other projects to launch their own zero-knowledge chains that settle to Ethereum and share liquidity through Polygon's AggLayer, a cross-chain aggregation layer in development. As with all crypto, POL/MATIC is volatile and the token migration adds a layer of complexity for existing holders. POL (ex-MATIC) (POL) FAQ
Is MATIC a good investment?
We don't give recommendations. MATIC is volatile and the project is undergoing significant architecture changes. Do your own research.
What is the difference between Polygon PoS and zkEVM?
Polygon PoS is a separate blockchain that checkpoints to Ethereum; Polygon zkEVM is a zero-knowledge rollup that settles directly on Ethereum, providing stronger security guarantees.
How are TheWeal's MATIC predictions made?
Model-based scenarios from price history, volatility and regime — not a forecast and not advice. See methodology.
How do I store MATIC?
MATIC on Ethereum is an ERC-20 token; on Polygon PoS it is the native gas token. Both can be held in MetaMask or a hardware wallet.
Can I lose money holding MATIC?
Yes. Crypto prices can fall sharply. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.
What is the MATIC to POL migration?
In late 2023, Polygon began migrating its core token from MATIC to POL at a 1:1 ratio as part of its Polygon 2.0 roadmap. POL is intended to serve as the staking token across multiple Polygon chains simultaneously, expanding its utility beyond the single PoS sidechain.
