What is Lido DAO (LDO)?
Lido DAO (LDO) is the governance token of the Lido protocol, the largest liquid staking service on Ethereum by total ETH staked. Lido was founded in 2020, shortly after Ethereum launched its Beacon Chain and opened staking with a 32 ETH minimum per validator. Lido solved the access problem by pooling ETH from many depositors and delegating it to a curated set of professional node operators, issuing stETH receipt tokens to depositors proportional to their share of the pool. LDO governance is conducted through the Lido DAO, with LDO holders voting on decisions including which node operators are admitted to the validator set, the protocol's fee structure (currently 10% of staking rewards), treasury spending and which new networks to support.
Lido has grown to dominate Ethereum liquid staking, at times controlling over 30% of all staked ETH. This concentration has been a persistent topic in Ethereum governance discussions, with some researchers and community members arguing that any single entity controlling that share of validators creates systemic risk for Ethereum's consensus. Lido has maintained that its node operator set is diverse enough to mitigate this risk, but the debate continues. The protocol has also expanded to other proof-of-stake chains.
LDO's value is tied to Lido's growth in assets under management and the 10% fee on staking rewards it charges, though LDO governance rights do not automatically accrue this fee revenue to token holders. As with all crypto, LDO is volatile. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.
