What is The Graph (GRT)?
The Graph (GRT) is the native token of a decentralised indexing protocol that solves a specific and practical problem in blockchain application development. When a developer builds a DeFi application or NFT marketplace, they typically need to display information like historical swap prices, user positions, collection statistics or event feeds. Raw blockchain data is stored as a sequence of transactions and logs rather than in a queryable database, which makes retrieving this information efficiently very difficult directly from a node. The Graph allows developers to define "subgraphs" — instructions for indexing specific smart-contract events and organising the data into a queryable format — which are then processed by network participants and served via a GraphQL API.
The Graph launched its decentralised mainnet in December 2020 and its role was built into the infrastructure of major DeFi protocols during their development, with Uniswap, Aave, Compound and dozens of other protocols relying on it to power their front-end interfaces. The network has three participant types: Indexers (who stake GRT, run index nodes and serve query responses), Curators (who signal GRT on subgraphs to indicate quality, earning a share of query fees for doing so) and Delegators (who stake GRT with Indexers without running nodes, earning a portion of Indexer rewards).
The Graph has expanded beyond Ethereum to index data from many other blockchains. GRT is used to stake in the above roles and to pay for query fees. As with all crypto, GRT is volatile. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.
