What is Maker (MKR)?
Maker (MKR) is the governance and recapitalisation token of the MakerDAO protocol, the system that creates the DAI stablecoin. Maker has operated continuously since 2017 on Ethereum and is one of the longest-running DeFi protocols. MKR holders vote on all material parameters of the Maker system: which assets can be used as collateral to mint DAI, the minimum collateralisation ratios for each asset, stability fees (the interest rates charged to DAI borrowers), the Dai Savings Rate, which collateral is admitted into the Peg Stability Module, and decisions about surplus and treasury allocation.
What distinguishes MKR from most governance tokens is its role as the protocol's last-resort insurance. If a collateral type loses value too quickly for the liquidation system to cover the debt, the Maker protocol can mint new MKR and sell it into the market to cover the shortfall — diluting existing MKR holders. This creates a genuine alignment: holders who vote for risky collateral types bear the downside through potential dilution. Conversely, when Maker runs a surplus, it uses those funds to buy back and burn MKR, reducing supply over time. This buy-and-burn mechanism has been an ongoing feature of the protocol.
In 2023, MakerDAO rebranded its broader product ambitions under the name Sky, introducing a new token structure alongside MKR. MKR continues as the main governance and recapitalisation token. As with all crypto, MKR is volatile. This page is information only and is not financial advice; always do your own research.
