What is Worldcoin (WLD)?
Worldcoin (WLD) is the token of the World project (rebranded from Worldcoin in 2024), a digital identity and financial network co-founded by Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, and Alex Blania. The project was founded in 2019 and launched its token in July 2023. Its central product is World ID, a privacy-preserving proof-of-personhood credential: users scan their iris with a physical hardware device called an Orb, which converts the iris pattern into an encrypted numeric code (an iris code) that is compared against existing iris codes to verify the person is unique and has not registered before. The actual image is not stored; only the processed code is retained for comparison. The stated goal is to create an identity layer for the internet that can distinguish real humans from AI bots or sock puppets without requiring government documents.
WLD tokens are distributed to people who verify their World ID with an Orb, framed as a form of universal basic income for early participants. The project has deployed Orbs in dozens of countries and claims millions of verified humans. Regulatory scrutiny has followed: data protection authorities in Germany, France, Kenya and Spain have at various times ordered the suspension of Orb operations in their jurisdictions pending investigations into biometric data collection. The project disputes that it handles biometric data in a way that triggers these regulations.
WLD is a speculative and politically contested asset. It is issued on Ethereum and the World Chain (its own layer-2). The project's long-run value proposition depends on whether iris-based proof-of-personhood achieves mainstream adoption and whether the WLD token plays an essential role in that ecosystem.
