What is Ethereum Classic (ETC)?
Ethereum Classic (ETC) is the original Ethereum blockchain, preserved by a community that refused to adopt a controversial hard fork in 2016. The context: in June 2016, a smart contract called the DAO was exploited and approximately $60 million in ETH was drained. The Ethereum Foundation and a large majority of the community enacted a hard fork that reversed the transactions and returned the funds. A principled minority argued that "code is law" — blockchains should be immutable and human intervention to reverse transactions undermines the entire premise. They continued running the original chain, which was named Ethereum Classic.
ETC retains smart-contract functionality but did not follow Ethereum's 2022 transition to proof of stake. It continues using proof-of-work mining with SHA-256 and Ethash. Its total supply has a defined cap with periodic reductions in block rewards, unlike Ethereum's more open-ended emission. The downside of this design is significantly lower mining hash rate than either Bitcoin or the current Ethereum, which makes ETC more vulnerable to 51% attacks — events where a single miner acquires majority hash power and reorganises blocks to reverse transactions or double-spend. ETC suffered multiple serious 51% attacks in 2019 and 2020.
ETC is an ideological project as much as a commercial one and appeals to those who prioritise strict immutability. Its ecosystem and developer activity are modest compared with Ethereum and other smart-contract platforms. As with all crypto, it is volatile.
