What is VeChain (VET)?
VeChain (VET) is a layer-1 blockchain designed primarily for supply-chain and enterprise-grade data management. It was founded in 2015 by Sunny Lu, a former CIO of Louis Vuitton China, who saw an opportunity to use blockchain technology to verify the provenance and authenticity of physical goods and to track data across complex supply chains. VeChain has attracted partnerships in food safety, luxury goods authentication, pharmaceutical supply chains and carbon credit tracking, predominantly with enterprises in Asia and Europe, including collaborations with organisations in China and partnerships with PwC and DNV.
VeChain uses a dual-token model that separates the network's two economic functions. VET is the primary value and transfer token, representing ownership in the network and generating VTHO (VeChain Thor Energy) automatically as a passive reward for holders. VTHO is the token used to pay for transactions and smart-contract execution on the network. By keeping these functions separate, VeChain argues that enterprises can model the cost of using the network (VTHO) independently from the speculative price of VET, providing more predictable transaction economics for business planning.
VeChain uses a Proof of Authority consensus mechanism with 101 authority masternodes, which trades full decentralisation for higher transaction throughput and stable performance.
