What is Bonk (BONK)?
Bonk (BONK) is a community-created memecoin on Solana launched on 25 December 2022, airdropped to a wide range of Solana ecosystem participants as an explicitly community-driven project. The timing was deliberate: the Solana ecosystem had just gone through one of its worst periods, with the collapse of FTX in November 2022 wiping out a major supporter of the Solana ecosystem, cratering SOL's price and causing many projects to lose funding. BONK was framed by its anonymous creators as a gift to the community — distributed to Solana NFT holders, developers and other participants as a way of reinvigorating on-chain activity and sentiment.
BONK adopted a Shiba Inu dog theme similar to Dogecoin and other memecoins and has no formal utility or product roadmap. Its total supply is approximately 93.5 trillion tokens. After the initial airdrop, BONK's price surged dramatically as it was listed on exchanges and attracted retail speculative interest. It became one of the most widely held tokens by wallet count on Solana and its trading volume contributed meaningfully to on-chain activity metrics during recovery in 2023.
Like all memecoins, BONK's price is driven by community sentiment, social-media attention and speculative momentum rather than any underlying cash flows or product value.
