Was ist Uniswap (UNI)?
Uniswap (UNI) is the governance token of the Uniswap Protocol, the largest decentralised exchange (DEX) by cumulative trading volume. The protocol was created by Hayden Adams and launched on Ethereum in November 2018, drawing inspiration from a concept Vitalik Buterin had described in a blog post about on-chain market makers. Uniswap v1 was a proof of concept; v2, released in 2020, added ERC-20 to ERC-20 pairs and became the foundation for the DeFi summer boom; v3, released in 2021, introduced concentrated liquidity, allowing liquidity providers to specify price ranges for their capital rather than spreading it evenly, dramatically improving capital efficiency.
The innovation at Uniswap's core is the automated market maker (AMM) model. Traditional exchanges use order books where buyers and sellers post bids and asks that match when they agree on a price. Uniswap eliminates order books entirely: liquidity providers deposit pairs of tokens into smart-contract pools, and prices are set automatically by a constant-product formula (x * y = k). Every trade changes the ratio of tokens in the pool, moving the price to reflect the new balance, and the trader pays a small fee that accrues to liquidity providers. This design means anyone with tokens can provide liquidity and anyone can trade without a counterparty needing to be present at the same moment.
The UNI governance token was distributed in September 2020 in a retroactive airdrop to all addresses that had previously interacted with Uniswap, allocating 400 UNI to each eligible wallet — worth several thousand dollars at peak prices. This became one of the most discussed airdrops in crypto history. UNI holders can vote on protocol upgrades, fee tier additions, treasury spending and other parameters. The protocol itself earns trading fees that go to liquidity providers; whether to activate a "fee switch" that routes a portion of fees to UNI holders has been a recurring and contentious governance debate.
