Free fitness during Wellness Week at SAIT

Students were encouraged to try the recreational activities available on campus for free during Wellness Week between Sept. 10 and Sept. 14.

Instructor-led fitness classes are offered at SAIT throughout the year. Students who purchase the RecX pass can join in classes such as Yoga, Get Ripped!, Box X, and more.

SAIT activities can be found on the SAIT Rec App, the IMLeagues website and at the Wellness Centre desk in the Campus Centre building. Fitness class registration is available on the SAIT Rec App for Wellness Week. The app can also be used to view intramural schedules and sign up.

Those who create an IMLeagues account can register for intramural programs and instructor-led classes on their account.

Parking validation is provided to people registered in recreation programs.

Volleyball, dodgeball, ice hockey and flag football are some of the intramural programs accessible at SAIT, and are offered to the staff and public as well.

Jeremy Pohl, a power engineering student at SAIT, said he’s interested in participating in these programs, particularly dodgeball.

“I think that would be pretty interesting for first year students,” said Pohl.

He said he enjoys all sports, especially hockey and volleyball.

Milap Desai, who is enrolled in the SAIT Civil Engineering Technologies program, said it would be a good way to meet new people.  He himself would like to try the yoga classes.

Desai said there are also plenty of activities one can do on their own time to get in their exercise, such as walking, running, and biking around the city, while enjoying the great views in Calgary.

Assistant coach of the Trojans men’s basketball team, Murphy Beya, who played for the team last year, said he believes taking part in these classes could be beneficial for students.

“If you are feeling stressed from school, participating in these classes may be a good way to release.”

He said that along with intramurals SAIT offers extramural sports, which take place at other post-secondary schools including University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

Intramurals are open to ACAD and SAIT students who opted to include the Wellness Centre membership fees in their tuition. Other students can participate in the programs by purchasing yearly or monthly passes.

Beya said that it is very affordable for students to purchase a RecX Pass.

The pass will be offered to students for $60 for one semester until Sept. 14, afterwards it will be sold for $80.
