Awareness: it’ll grow on you

Gentlemen at SAIT, Movember is here and the time has come to grow your moustache.

Movember is a campaign intended to promote awareness and raise donations for prostate cancer research. And second-year Travel and Tourism student Mike Welk is growing his ‘stache this month for the cause.

Welk says it’s a great way to encourage communication between men about their health.
“Movember is about getting people involved and having fun at the same time,” said Welk. “Men don’t like to talk about prostate cancer and stuff like that, but this gives them a chance to get together and talk.”

Welk said the campaign is progressively getting better every year, with more people participating and more money being raised. However, he hopes there will be more support and participation this time around.

Rebecca von Goetz, executive vice president of Prostate Cancer Canada, said in 2009, close to 35,000 participants across Canada raised $7.8 million. She hopes $10 million can be raised this year.

“This is our third year participating in Movember, and it’s a great campaign for us,” said von Goetz. “It promotes comradeship, and discussion for issues that are below the belt.”

Von Goetz said prostate cancer is the most common cancer to affect men. She hopes to educate men and encourage discussion about the disease.

Welk said he’s trying to get as many people as possible to grow their moustache. “This is really important, because men can’t hide behind the image that they are invincible. Prostate cancer affects one in six men, and we need to take notice of this.

“Even if you don’t donate and you don’t grow a moustache, just be aware and know how to get checked and how to manage your health,” said Welk. “Grow your mos and have fun.”
